I have been thinking about and using AI technologies for the past few years in my work as a full time artist, across different fields, uses and outcomes. This talk explores impacts and uses of AI in my multifaceted work in four categories: public art, studio practice, community workshop facilitation and commercial practice. Each of these areas have different objectives, needs and responses, and have been affected in different ways by recent technological developments. I detail these objectives and impacts from my personal experience, and think about how and why these models of art practice are being changed by the use of AI.
I would like to categorize AI technologies are a Tool, Media or Platform, what the differences are between these positions. Using my experience to illustrate, I show how different specific AI implementations can fit into different categories, AI can be used as a tool to add to the repertoire or creative capacity of an artist, or AI can be used to create new platforms that degenerate an audience or user's experience. It is important for artists to be aware of the effects and context of tools when they are using them, and for audiences or users to have a level of media literacy when engaging with outputs that may have been touched by AI fingers.
